Reading A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas for the First Time

ACOTAR is a very popular fantasy series that I have never read before. This year I have decided to change that and start 2025 with the series. After reading Throne of Glass and loving it I needed to read ACOTAR and find out why everyone loved it so much and if I would think the same. I was curious what my thoughts would be going into this series and I am happy to say that I have no regrets so far. Even though this is an extremely popular series this review will have no spoilers.

Cover of A Court of thorns and roses. Red background with a black outlined wolf in the center. Bright yellow title overlapping the wolf.

Synopsis

Feyre is a huntress. And when she sees a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she kills the predator and takes its prey to feed herself and her family.

But the wolf was not what it seemed, and Feyre cannot predict the high price she will have to pay for its death…

Dragged away from her family for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding even more than his piercing green eyes suggest.

As Feyre’s feelings for Tamlin turn from hostility to passion, she learns that the faerie lands are a far more dangerous place than she realized. And Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

Review

I am so glad I finally decided to read this series because I was missing out on so much. I loved this book so much and it left me eager for more. The world is so magical and amazing. The mortal world felt similar to ours but Prythian, where the fae live and most of the book is set, is a dream. In this book you only really see the spring court but the other courts are mentioned. I can’t wait to explore the other courts more in the next books. Even with the spring court not being up to its usual standards, it sounds so gorgeous and luxurious. I would love to live in a constant state of spring.

There weren’t too many characters to fall in love with in this book. Feyre is a decent main character but she has already had a lot of character development and I think she will get even better. Tamlin was fine in this book but I couldn’t fall in love with him after everything I’ve heard about this series. Rhysand was the character that really caught my interest. I didn’t think I would see much of him in this first book but I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of him in the last third of the book.

The second part of this book was even better than the first half. It was when the plot developed more and things got more dangerous. The ending of this book was truly traumatic for Feyre and everyone involved and I don’t know how she made it out alive. I like how the plot slowly evolved from something that seemed so insignificant to an imminent and life threatening problem.

It seems this book is popular for a reason and I highly recommend picking it up if you like adult fantasy books or maybe this is your sign to reread it if it has been a while. This is also a good choice if you like Beauty and the Beast retellings since it is actually more similar to the story than I thought it would be. Let me know your thoughts on this book in the comments!
