Keep reading for a spoiler-free review on Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.
Synopsis
In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King’s Champion.
Her name is Celaena Sardothien.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a faraway country will befriend her. But something rotten dwells in the castle, and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival—and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
Review
Throne of Glass is the first book in a 7 book series. I had a great time reading it and I’m super excited to continue with the series.
I love Celaena so much. It’s amazing how she can be a deadly assassin and act like a child at the same time. This was one of the few times where the main character is actually my favorite character. I am not a fan of Prince Dorian though. He isn’t a bad character I’m just not vibing with him.
Chaol, on the other hand, I am slowly starting to like more and more. He is the captain of the guard and helps Celaena in her training.
I like how even though there is no magic in the world right now, you can feel it hiding around the corner like it’s waiting to come out. I hope we find out more on the history of magic in future books.
The plot was interesting and there were a few different pieces that kept it moving. It all came together in the end and made sense. It can be a little bit predictable but I personally didn’t mind that.
One of my favorite parts was the final duel in the competition. It was very dramatic and had me sitting on the edge of my seat.
The castle is also really cool although I agree with Celaena that the glass portion of the castle is kind of scary. I would love to see the library. Celaena loves to read so she spent a lot of time in the library.
I didn’t really like the romance that was happening. Neither Dorian or Chaol seem like the one to me. We will see how it progresses in the next books.
One thing I wasn’t a fan of was how the author did multiple point of views. It was still mainly in Celaena’s POV but sometimes it would randomly switch to a different character’s POV which made it confusing because it didn’t clearly state the change.
This book was very intriguing and I would recommend it. If you like other popular YA fantasy series then you are likely to enjoy this book.
